Deep Winter, Deep Core
January kind of turned into core month for me as a yoga teacher. My classes have featured a lot of core work, connecting to core, and curling around the core. Being in the deep part of winter it makes sense that core would feature so prominently. Autumn is all about letting go, releasing that which no longer serves you and holding to those things that do. Winter is about going inward, deepening the connection to self, healing, building strength for the season of growth.

January Isn't The Best Time To Detox
We all know the feeling of making it to January 1st feeling a bit worse for all the indulgences we've been partaking in for the last few months. It is very seductive to follow all the marketing we're given as the new year begins to make massive changes to everything - "New Year, New You!" The gyms are packed in early January and by February they've thinned back out to the people who already had a gym habit. You do a detox just to go back into the old habits you had before,

Gut Health is Whole Being Health
It is estimated that 11% of the global population suffers from IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. And a disproportionally large number of these people are female. The majority of my patients end up coming to me only after seeing at least 1 doctor for their symptoms, and usually 3 or 4. Finding relief from IBS symptoms is literally life changing - no more pain, no more avoiding foods that may or may not make a difference, no more rushing to the bathroom or being so bloated y

Reduce Plastic Consumption for Your Health
Did you know that you eat a credit card's worth of plastic each week? And a coat hanger's worth of plastic each month? Sounds gross, right? Well, it is, and it is detrimental to your health in ways we don't even realize yet. Beyond plastics being so prevalent that you're literally eating it, it is made from fossil fuels like oil. With our indiscriminate consumption of plastic we are fueling wars and complete destruction of the environment in our search for more oil and with

Mindful Eating
How do you approach eating? It is a numbers game? Do you have shame around the foods you eat? Do you barely think about what you’re actually putting in your mouth? Everyone has a unique relationship to food, one that can be challenging to change. If you are looking to change the way you eat, it is likely because there is something else that needs improved: your weight, your muscle mass, your insulin sensitivity, etc. For type A people, tracking calories and macros can be a

Sustainable Nutrition
Sustainability is a value that I live by. Mostly, I'm wondering how I can make my lifestyle more sustainable for the environment. I had a talk with a colleague today where she brought up sustainability in another context: sustainable health. This is something that I work on with my clients but have never thought about it in these terms. How can you make your healthy habits sustainable? Mostly this comes into question when we are discussing weight loss. Many people have a

Gardening to Heal Yourself and the Earth
When the season turns to spring I always find myself impatient to begin planting. I plant herbs, vegetables, melons, and flowers, and this year am going to embark on a berry section of my garden. All my gardening is limited by the deer – it all has to exist inside the fenced area I have, so planning is super important. Deciding what to plant is based off what my family eats the most. Tomatoes certainly top the list and it would be wonderful for me to get to a point that I

My Story
"I'm not like you, I just don't like eating healthy." I hear some version of this very often from my clients. It brings to mind the notion that no one knows what anyone else is going through. So I thought I'd share my story for anyone interested! I've had a headache my entire life. 1 year out of college, I'd had a stomach ache for 7 years. Neither of these symptoms seemed affected by anything - not medications, not what I ate or even if I ate, my head and stomach both hurt. A
